The three people hit by a vehicle in south-end Barrie last week — two of whom have been identifed as local Special Olympians, along with an Empower Simcoe staff member — are still receiving care at a Toronto trauma centre.
The collision happened on Thursday, Dec. 1 at Mapleview and Bayview drives around 6:30 p.m. The group was heading to a Barrie Colts game at Sadlon Arena when the crash happened. All three pedestrians were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Cassie Korzenko, 32, of Barrie, has been charged with three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm. She remains in custody.
Empower Simcoe spokesperson Jamie Hall confirmed to BarrieToday on Monday that all three victims were still in hospital and that two were Special Olympians.
“One is no longer active with the Special Olympics, while the other person currently participates in his sport," he said.
Empower Simcoe provides services to people with physical and intellectual disabilities.
“Our Empower Simcoe support worker’s condition has improved, as has one of the people we support," Hall said. "The other person’s condition remains the same."
Empower Simcoe is not released the names of the victims at this time, but they are a 52-year-old female staff member and two male clients, aged 53 and 44.
Korzenko remains in custody following a virtual court appearance Monday morning and is awaiting a bail hearing.
A GoFundMe page started by the Empower Simcoe has so far raised more than $8,000 of its $50,000 goal.
Barrie police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have dash-cam footage to contact police at 705-725-7025.
