York Region is bringing permanent speed cameras to Mulock Drive in Newmarket and other locations this month.
York Region is installing 20 automated speed enforcement cameras throughout all nine municipalities this month, coming in at fixed locations. One of those locations will be on Mulock Drive at Newmarket High School.
The region said the goal of these new, fixed cameras will be to change driver behaviour and increase safety.
“Aggressive driving (including speeding) collisions represent 45 per cent of severe collisions on regional roads,” the region said in a news release. “When an ASE camera is in the area, vehicle operating speeds are reduced by approximately 10 km/h and speed limit compliance increases by approximately 25 per cent.”
York Region has run a rotating speed enforcement camera system for several years, which moved the cameras to different locations throughout the region. While three of these mobile cameras will continue to rotate every three months, the Mulock Drive camera and others are now planned to be fixed in place.
Newmarket will not be getting any other fixed camera locations during this month, and Aurora won't either. Other locations throughout the region will be coming to school areas, including Holland Landing Public School and Mount Albert Public School in East Gwillimbury and Jersey Public School in Georgina.
Aurora does have mobile cameras throughout town. A camera will be coming to St. John’s Sideroad between Cliff Trail and Willow Farm Lane starting Dec. 31, near St. Anne’s School. At that time, the current mobile camera on Yonge Street by St. Andrew’s College that has been active since September will be relocated.
The region recently established an administrative monetary penalty system to automate traffic penalties and avoid a court process, though an appeals process is still in place. The region said revenues will support road safety improvements like new signals and street lighting.
Newmarket has similarly implemented fixed-speed cameras throughout the town outside schools, which have been running for a few months.
The region noted that due to the Canada Post labour disruption, tickets may be delayed or sent through an alternative means like a courier.
