'Ardent champion' of college, students named new chair at Georgian

Steve Lowe, an Owen Sound resident, community champion and wealth advisor at RBC Dominion Securities Inc., is the 2024-25 chair of Georgian College’s board of governors. The board held its first meeting of the academic year on Sept. 26. 

“I’m honoured to serve in this challenging leadership role and to work alongside a passionate and committed group of community volunteers and internal representatives,” said Lowe. “Georgian College is a strategic partner in our region – collaborating to solve complex issues, producing highly skilled graduates to meet current and anticipated labour-market needs, launching and revising programs to meet the jobs of today and the future, and driving innovation to strengthen our economy and communities. I look forward to the year ahead as we continue to advance our influence and impact.”  

Lowe joined the board of governors in 2020 and recently served as vice-chair.  

“Steve has been an ardent champion of the college and our students, bringing with him a wealth of experience and expertise that will be invaluable as we continue to deliver an unrivalled experience and develop our next five-year strategic plan to guide us into the future,” said Kevin Weaver, president and CEO, Georgian College. “He’s been a significant contributor since joining our board and brings a unique perspective and deep commitment to community that will be an asset for this leadership role.” 

Prior to his career at RBC Dominion Securities, Lowe was managing partner for a national accounting firm and an entrepreneur growing a family business. As a chartered accountant and entrepreneur, he developed an expertise in wealth management for his clients and specializes in working with family-owned businesses, and professionals. 

Lowe is active in the community. He is past chair of the Owen Sound Family Health Team and has served on the board of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. He is a strong supporter of the local business community and entrepreneurship, and he is a founding board member of the Blue Water Angel Investor Group and Catapult Grey Bruce.

Professionally, he has been involved with CPA Ontario as a member of the Professional Conduct and Discipline Committees. 

New members of the board this year include Barbara Dickson, Courtney Duthie, Joe Johnson and Rebecca Thivierge.
