Work crews have been busy in Barrie today tearing down the old Tiffin Street bridge as part of ongoing work on Highway 400 up above.
Workers began tearing down the structure Friday night and heavy trucks were removing concrete, rubble and rebar from the scene today.
The project was expected to take most of the weekend, but a worker at the scene said Tiffin Street could be open as early as tonight, if not Sunday morning.
Only half of the bridge structure is being removed. The old bridge's former northbound lanes are now being used for southbound traffic through the city as part of the multi-staged Highway 400 project.
With the bridge's underpass being closed, city traffic was being re-routed around the area, affecting Barrie streets such as Patterson Road on the west side of the span and Dyment Road to the east.
With Tiffin Street closed at the bridge, the closest roads that can be used to get from one side of Highway 400 to the other are Dunlop Street to the north and Essa Road to the south.
