Ferndale Park is located near Ardagh Road in Barrie.

A Barrie resident hopes a meet-and-greet with the mayor and Ward 6 councillor could speed along solutions for traffic concerns there.

Nasar Nader has scheduled the get together at Ferndale Park later this week, and asked Mayor Alex Nuttall and Coun. Nigussie Nigussie to attend.

At issue is the stretch of Ferndale Drive between Ardagh Road and Summerset Drive.

“It’s all about the speeding. Ferndale is a very crazy place, especially on the weekends,” said Nader, who has lived on nearby Phillips Street for a year now. “And the safety of kids in the morning.

“Parents have a lot of concerns dropping off and picking up their kids" at Ferndale Woods Elementary School, located at 170 Ferndale Dr. S., he added.

Nader wants parking on one side of Ferndale, from Ardagh to Summerset, considered to narrow the road, slow the traffic, and the possibility of speed cameras, although Nader acknowledges they are very expensive.

“If the speed limit is 40 (kilometres an hour), we have to obey the law, but I see people flying in there,” he said.

School zones are designated road areas near a school, and typically occur within 150 metres of the front of a school and have reduced speed limits during specific periods of the day.

City policy mandates a 40-km/h posted speed limit in front of elementary schools, as well as for roadways where – due to their geometric design – there is an increased probability of danger when a car drives at 50 km/h or a higher speed limit.

On major roads where there are elementary schools, a '40 km/h when flashing' speed limit is in effect. Barrie has these speed limits – which follow varying time schedules – in 23 elementary school locations.

The meet-and greet is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 31, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Ferndale Park, located at 150 Ferndale Dr. S.

Nader said Nuttall is scheduled to be there at 6:15 p.m.

Nader said there will be light refreshments.
