Survivor Day helps suicide loss survivors on healing journey
If someone you know has died by suicide, you are not alone; but you may feel that way. Grieving the loss of a loved one by suicide can seem very isolating. It is common for those who remain to feel confused and traumatized. But death by suicide does not diminish the need for those who remain to celebrate the lives and accomplishments of their loved ones.
Waypoint is honoured to host International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day on Saturday, Nov. 19. One of hundreds of events being held across Canada and the United States, it is a day for those affected by suicide loss to gather to gain understanding and find comfort in the knowledge that they truly are not alone.
Waypoint’s Survivor Day gathering will include a screening of Life Journeys: Reclaiming Life after Loss, a new documentary produced by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that traces the ongoing journey of grief and healing that follows a suicide. Drawing on stories and insights from long-term loss-survivors, the film unveils the resilience, hope and understanding we can achieve while celebrating the lives of those we lost.
“One of the objectives of Survivor Day is to offer hope to people who’ve recently lost someone to suicide,” said Glenn Robitaille, director of ethics and spiritual care at Waypoint. “The participants in the film share their experiences of loss and how they have coped and moved toward healing.”
Following the screening, Robitaille will lead the participants in a facilitated discussion focused on the contents of the film and finding hope and understanding after a suicide loss.
The event is free and everyone is welcome. If you have any questions, please contact Kristi Lalonde at [email protected] or 705-549-3181, ext. 2215.
