'Lot of potential': Barrie shelter seeking homes for senior cats

'Getting a cat like Theo or Agatha … it’s still a commitment, but it’s not that long of a commitment knowing that they’re middle-aged,' says OSPCA official

Tabby cats Agatha, left, and Theo are currently up for adoption at the Ontario SPCA Barrie Animal Centre.

The Ontario SPCA Barrie Animal Centre is on the hunt for a good home for two of its furry feline residents.

Theo is a 14-year-old tabby who has been at the local shelter since January, while Agatha is a 10-year-old tabby who has been calling the shelter home since late winter as well.

“They are both considered seniors ... Agatha has diabetes, but she’s currently in remission,” said Shannon Laflamme, community outreach co-ordinator for the animal shelter, adding the fee for the female feline has already been covered by a donation.

Theo currently has an adoption fee of $100, which she said they’re in the process of attempting to get it covered by additional donations.

Despite the fact that social-media posts have garnered quite a bit of attention for the cats, they have yet to be adopted.

“We are just not having anyone come in and look at them … and honestly, they’d be perfect for an elderly couple or a senior citizen,” she said.

In an Instagram post last week, Agatha was described as a “confident gal who is ready to run your household and make sure mealtime is always on time.”

“Agatha’s foster reports she loves mittens and her favourite toy is her wand …  she will even bring it with her around the house.”

In a separate post, Theo was described as “an active boy who is always busy,” whether that’s checking out the neighbourhood at the window, playing with feather toys or snuggling on the couch.

“Theo is used to living with dogs and is excited to meet new people. Theo is a senior kitty and will need a household able to accommodate him, as he is on medication for hyperthyroidism that he takes twice a day.”

Laflamme told BarrieToday that, while she can understand that their ages may be a contributing factor to why they’ve yet to be adopted, she’s confident they will make the perfect addition to someone’s home

“We are just coming out of kitten season … (and) kittens are cute. They’re cuddly and they’re tiny and that’s what everyone wants ... but cats on average can live anywhere from 15 to 20 years. Getting a kitten is a big commitment that a lot of people don’t understand,” she said.

“Getting a cat like Theo or Agatha … it’s still a commitment, but it’s not that long of a commitment knowing that they’re middle-aged.”

Both cats have a lot of potential, she added.

“They are so loving and funny and you’d never know their ages,” she said.

Anyone interested in possibly adopting Agatha or Theo can call the Barrie Ontario OSPA at 705-728-7311 or drop by the shelter, which is located at 91 Patterson Rd.
