The annual Kempenfelt Cup hockey tournament was back for 2024, and this year, the celebration was expanded to include more Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) schools than ever before.

This year, SCDSB schools from across Simcoe County participated in three separate tournaments, coming together to showcase their school spirit and raise money for a variety of charities.

In the inaugural North Simcoe Cup, Twin Lakes Secondary School was victorious in the boys’ division, while Georgian Bay District Secondary School won the girls’ division.

The first-ever Kempenfelt Cup—South saw Nantyr Shores Secondary School come up with the win in the boys’ division, with Banting Memorial High School taking home the championship in the girls’ division.

Finally, Barrie North Collegiate Institute team won the boys’ division and Maple Ridge Secondary School was triumphant in the girls’ division at the Kempenfelt Cup—Barrie. This event was held in honour of former SCDSB teacher and coach Martin Carl, who passed away in 2020.

The big winners are the charities supported by these events. More than $33,000 was raised overall: $2,000 for the Alliston Food Bank, $24,500 for Christmas Cheer, $1,500 for the Elmvale and District Food Bank, $3,000 for the Georgian Bay Food Network, and $2,250 for The Sharing Place.

The SCDSB would like to thank the organizers of each tournament — Colin Bowins, vice-principal at Eastview Secondary School, Hayden Adams, teacher at Bradford District High School, and Hailey McLean, principal at Georgian Bay District Secondary School — as well as all of the staff and students who supported and participated in these events.
