South Simcoe Police look into clown threats
INNISFIL — South Simcoe Police are investigating after complaints were received about messaging on the social media platform Instagram.
Recently, a trend among social media users in North America features scary clowns threatening to attend schools to terrorize children. Several people called police to report messages about clowns planning to attend Nantyr Shores Secondary School in Alcona.
"We've looked at the messaging, and determined there's no imminent threat to students," said Media Relations Officer Rich Williamson. "We're aware of the situation, and our school liaison officer was speaking to students on Thursday. We urge parents to speak to their children to make them aware of their surroundings at all times."
Williamson went on to say that anyone who has concerns should report any threatening messaging to officers.
"We're taking this seriously. The safety of our students is of the utmost importance. Anyone who knows who is behind this behaviour should give us a call. It's really a form of bullying, and students know that reporting it is the first step in stopping it."
Officers specially trained in cybercrime are looking at tracking down the culprits.
