In less than one hour, two Barrie men were arrested for impaired driving after attending police headquarters and speaking with officers at the front desk on Thursday. Actually, 58 minutes to be exact.

At 10:21 p.m. on Sept. 26, police a 38-year-old man surrendered himself at the Fairview Road headquarters on an outstanding warrant.

The investigating officer confirmed the warrant and, based upon their observations, also issued an alcohol-screening device test, which the male failed.

A breathalyzer technician conducted additional tests confirming the man had alcohol in his blood, but that he was not in excess of the legal limit, police say.

The man was later released after being charged with failing to comply with an undertaking and failure to comply with a release order. His driver’s licence was also suspended for three days for having a blood-alcohol concentration between 0.05 to 0.079, which falls within the 'warn range' under the Highway Traffic Act.

In the second incident, police say a 33-year-old man arrived at headquarters at 11:19 p.m. to determine if a family member of his was in custody.

"This male was observed displaying obvious signs of impairment and was arrested," police stated in a news release.

A breathalyzer technician confirmed that the man was impaired and, as a result, he was charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired (alcohol and drugs) and operation of a motor vehicle while impaired (blood-alcohol concentration 80 plus).

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on Oct. 21, 2024. The man's car was also impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days, under the Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) program.

"Barrie Police is reminding the public that there is zero tolerance when it comes to impaired driving and that anyone who doesn’t use available options after consuming alcohol or drugs, is putting the lives of others at risk if they choose to drive," the release stated.
