BarrieToday recently reached out to each candidate for city council in Barrie's 10 wards for a 300-word profile in their own words about their background and why people should vote for them.

I’m Bonnie North, and this October, I’m asking you to choose me as your Ward 7 councillor.
I grew up a military brat, became a military spouse, and served 19 years in the military, living all over Canada and the world in the process. I got an education, built a career, and was blessed to be a mom. It was tough to balance, but so worthwhile.
I went to school, was an award winning, competitive chef, supervised and trained a Navy Reserve cook’s division, worked in civilian jobs and owned small businesses. When my son left for university, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work as a community volunteer.
I’ve built my life by being highly adaptable to change, organized, disciplined, committed to public service, and drawing on the support and wisdom of family, friends, and community.
My fellow Ward 7 friends and neighbours tell me that healthcare access, housing costs, gridlock and community safety concern them. Like the rest of Barrie, we also struggle with unemployment, poverty, and access to mental healthcare and addictions treatment.
Barrie’s a great place to live and raise our families, but we still face serious challenges. I want to give back to our city by serving on council. I’ll draw upon my skills and experiences, and work alongside fellow residents, city council, staff, and other community and government agencies to solve the problems we face as neighbours and a city.
As a mom, spouse, business owner and naval reservist, I’ve honed my ability to make goals a reality, but I know we can do even more extraordinary things when we work together.
Please honour me, Bonnie North, with your vote as your Ward 7 councillor, and I’ll work tirelessly with you to achieve remarkable things for Barrie.
