BarrieToday recently reached out to each candidate for city council in Barrie's 10 wards for a 300-word profile in their own words about their background and why people should vote for them.

My name is Robert Thomson and I’m running for city councillor in Ward 5.
The reason I’m running for council is because Ward 5 has been neglected by city hall for too long.
My wife, sons, and I have lived in Ward 5 for the past 16 years. We’ve seen first-hand how slow progress can be when we don’t have an effective advocate at council.
The reason Ward 5 has been forgotten is because we are not sending a clear message in a clear voice to city hall.
That needs to change.
I have worked in the construction business for most of my life, I understand how to get big projects done on time and under budget. During my time in construction I have worked with both union and private crews to get the job done.
If I am elected my priority is to make Ward 5 more neighbourhood friendly. This is how I intend to do that.
- Get side walks built so residents can connect to the rest of the city in a safe and active manner.
- Connect Sproule Road to Ferndale.
- Strategic Road planning for public safety in our neighbourhoods.
- Preserve green space for all families to enjoy with smart growth.
- More affordable housing.
- Consult with residents before any development is approved.
- Work with city staff to find inefficiencies to lower taxes.
- Maintain and improve city services.
Listening is one of the most important parts of being a councillor. If you have a problem with the city I want to hear about it. From parking tickets to water main breaks, I want to be the person you call.
I look forward to meeting you over the coming weeks and hearing your ideas for making Ward 5 the best place to live in Barrie.
