Shelly Skinner created UPlift Black, an organization dedicated to increasing the visibility and economic development of the Black community in Canada.
UPlift Black is a social impact agency working to UPlift the Black community who live in Simcoe County. Their work is culturally based and anchored in 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusivity striving to achieve the ultimate goal of racial equity through a conscious and UPlifted community.
In founding UPlift Black, Shelly has helped shine a light on the needs of Black communities in Simcoe County and beyond. By providing business resources, inclusive, intersectional programs that focus on public education and advocacy, business and professional development and emergency and pandemic relief, Shelly is providing critical support for marginalized communities, business resources for Black business owners and educational workshops and corporate learning opportunities for entrepreneurs and helping those looking to become a better ally.
UPlift Black offers an accelerator program to help Black business owners and entrepreneurs thrive in Barrie. It provides assistance accessing seed funding, business planning, registration and strategy, entrepreneurial training, networking, research and development and more.
She is dedicated to supporting and enhancing the economic well-being and development of Black-owned businesses in our region, increasing the visibility of Black artists, providing opportunities for Black youth to help shape the next generation of leaders, and helping non-Black business leaders, students and residents become culturally competent.
The Economic Development Award is presented to an individual who has had an important impact on the economic well-being of our community.
