Local Apples at Nicholyn Farms

As the crisp fall air settles in, apple season is in full swing, and at Nicholyn Farms, we're excited to offer a delicious selection of locally grown, non-sprayed, and non-waxed apples. Sourced from orchards that prioritize sustainable growing practices, these apples come directly from nature to your table without the use of harmful chemicals or artificial treatments. We currently have four incredible varieties available: Gala, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, and Cortland. Here’s what makes each one unique and how you can best enjoy them.

1. Gala Apples
Flavour Profile: Gala apples are known for their sweet, mild flavour and crisp, juicy texture. Their thin skin makes them an easy-to-eat apple, perfect for snacking. The flesh has a balanced sweetness with subtle hints of pear and honey.

Best Use: Galas are perfect for eating fresh out of hand, adding to salads for a sweet crunch, or pairing with cheeses. Their mild flavour also works well in smoothies and fresh fruit bowls.

2. Honeycrisp Apples
Flavour Profile: As the name suggests, Honeycrisp apples offer an explosion of sweet and tart flavorus. They are exceptionally crisp, with a juicy snap that is hard to resist. Their flavour is complex, with a pleasant balance of sugar and acidity, making them a crowd favourite.

Best Use: Honeycrisp apples are ideal for snacking, as they maintain their crunch and juiciness. They're also great for baking pies, adding to fruit salads, or making cider because of their sweet-tart balance. Honeycrisps hold their shape well when baked, making them a versatile choice.

3. McIntosh Apples
Flavour Profile: McIntosh apples have a tender, white flesh with a tart, vinous flavour and a subtle floral aroma. When eaten fresh, they are juicy with a soft bite, but their flavour deepens when cooked, becoming even sweeter.

Best Use: McIntosh apples are fantastic for applesauce, apple butter, and pies. They break down when cooked, giving a smooth, saucy texture, which is perfect for homemade sauces and baked goods. They’re also a great choice for juicing.

4. Cortland Apples
Flavour Profile: Cortland apples are slightly tart with a hint of sweetness, offering a crisp texture and a bright white flesh that resists browning longer than most apples. They have a refreshing, clean flavour that’s perfect for a wide variety of uses.

Best Use: Cortlands are excellent for salads and fruit platters because they don’t brown as quickly. Their balanced flavour makes them ideal for baking pies, tarts, or crisps, and they also work beautifully in applesauce. Cortland apples hold their shape better than McIntosh when baked, making them a great alternative for firmer apple-based dishes.
