Community tree-planting events scheduled for May 10, 24 and 30 have all now been cancelled due to COVID-19. Living Green Barrie plans to reschedule the tree plantings for this fall.

Like many other small organizations, Living Green is trying to adapt financially to the new reality. With fundraisers and spring events cancelled, sponsorships and contributions to their 10 000 Trees for Barrie campaign have dried up.

Undeterred, Living Green has recently launched a rain barrel fundraiser to help support their tree planting and environmental education programs. $10 from each barrel sold will be donated to Living Green; Barrie’s only registered environmental charity.

Rain barrels, already a trend on the rise, collect free water from a roof and store it for future use in gardens and for watering lawns, shrubs, and trees. You can hook up multiple barrels to the same downspout. The barrels, composters and other products are sold online through Rainbarrel.ca and will be delivered to homes in Barrie, Oro, Orillia, Springwater, Innisfil and Alliston. Because they are pre-paid and delivered, there is no person-to-person contact.

These repurposed barrels sell for $55 plus $10 for delivery, including tax. Home delivery will begin the week of May 17. Delivery drivers will follow physical-distancing protocols and will leave rain barrels in people’s driveways.

According to Andee Pelan, Project Director of Living Green “This truly is a green initiative. Installing one or more rain barrels reduces the amount of municipal water that people use on their lawns and gardens. Also, by holding back water during rainstorms, they divert roof stormwater runoff that could harm Lake Simcoe. Finally, RainBarrel.ca barrels are recycled products and therefore no new plastic is created.”

RainBarrel.ca reclaims food grade barrels and repurposes them as rain barrels. Once used to transport fruits and vegetables, they now offer years of reliable service as rain barrels and tend to be sturdier than comparable barrels. They offer different sizes and colours of rain barrels, composters and associated products. All barrels come with a mosquito filter basket, spigot/tap, overflow adaptor and overflow hose.
