Several new COVID cases linked to outbreak at Barrie manufacturing facility

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 13 new cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe County today. 

There are seven new COVID cases reported in Barrie today, including five linked to one workplace outbreak at a manufacturing facility in Barrie, according to the health unit.

The outbreak cases include two men between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, and two women between 45 and 64 years old.

The other two Barrie cases include a woman and a man between 18 and 34 years old. The man's case is linked to close contact and the woman's case is under investigation. 

On Tuesday, Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, said there were two manufacturing facilities in Barrie with active COVID-19 outbreaks. He did not name the facilities. 

There are also institutional outbreaks in Barrie at Waterford Retirement Community, IOOF Seniors Homes (Baldwin Lane unit) and at Allandale Station Retirement Residence. An institutional outbreak is declared at a long-term care facility if just one case of COVID-19 is confirmed in a staff member or resident. 

There are four new cases in New Tecumseth today, including three women between 35 and 44 years old. One case is linked to close contact, one is community-acquired, and the third is under investigation. There is also a woman over 80 years old whose case is linked to the outbreak at Simcoe Manor long-term care home in Beeton.

The County of Simcoe has now confirmed 43 resident cases and 29 staff cases at Simcoe Manor since the outbreak began at the end of September. Ten residents have died. The county has reported 29 residents and 25 staff have recovered. 

A COVID-19 outbreak at Riverwood Senior Living in Alliston is now declared over by the health unit. 

Among the other COVID cases being reported today, there is one new case in Clearview Township. A woman between 65 and 79 years old has tested positive for the coronavirus. Her transmission is linked to close contact with another case. This is the 12th case of COVID reported in Clearview Township in the last 14 days. 

The final case reported by the health unit today is a Ramara Township woman between 35 and 44 years old. Her case is still under investigation. 

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,497 cases of COVID-19, with 1,414 of those in Simcoe County. There are 1,284 cases listed as recovered. Six people are currently hospitalized, five in Simcoe and one in Muskoka. The health unit has recorded 50 deaths.

The incidence rate for Simcoe County is 265 cases per 100,000 people.
