INNISFIL – Are you using wipes to disinfect your surfaces during the COVID-19 pandemic? If you do, make sure you throw them in the garbage instead of down the toilet. InnServices is reminding residents and businesses throughout Simcoe County that wipes and paper towels should not be flushed because they do not break down like toilet paper and can cause overflow, health concerns, environmental issues, and property damage.

For property owners, blocked pipes can lead to toilet and sink overflows and costly repairs. For municipalities, blocked pipes increase costs due to unscheduled maintenance and service disruptions. No wipes - including those marked "flushable" - should be flushed down the toilet.

"We understand that many people are using disinfectant wipes to help protect themselves and their families in response to COVID-19. However, flushing certain items, like wipes, down your toilet can cause clogged pipes. It can also result in costly sewer maintenance," says Wally Malcolm, President & CEO of InnServices. "We are asking for your help to ensure we maintain the integrity of our sewage system."

Wipes are among the leading causes of sewer system backups, impacting sewer system and treatment plant pumps and treatment systems. InnServices staff say the following items should never be flushed down the toilet: personal care, baby and disinfectant wipes, makeup remover cloths, paper towels, cotton swabs, dental floss, diapers, grease/fat from food, hair, old medicines and sanitary products. Think twice before you flush. Do your part to keep your toilet and our sewage system healthy!
