The following letter is in response to a story titled 'City pumping $2.8M into backyard flooding issues on Marta Cres.,' published Oct. 4.

Regarding Marta Crescent backyard water problems, did the people who bought those million-dollar homes not look at the sites beforehand?

Did the fact that the area was called a Bear Creek Wetland, and their backyards sloped down to a marshy area, not indicate there might be water there?

I had basement water seepage and was told to landscape to ensure my house was the highest point. I never considered getting other taxpayers to pay for it.

My taxes shouldn't pay to upgrade residents' backyards for something obvious.

The city should ensure building permits aren't allowed that close to a wetland.

But I'm OK with the city taking sediment out of the creek to help flow away from the houses.

Hopefully the homeowners aren't fertilizing their lawns a lot to pollute the creek, and Lake Simcoe, because those lucky nature-adjacent Marta Crescent residents may be able to catch brook trout in the creek, as in times past.
