Attention swashbucklers! Set sail for adventure at Pirates of the Bay

Saturday's event at Discovery Harbour promises day filled with swashbuckling adventures and family-friendly activities for visitors of all ages

PENETANGUISHENE – Ahoy, mateys! Get ready for an exhilarating voyage at Discovery Harbour’s Pirates of the Bay on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024. This exciting event promises a day filled with swashbuckling adventures and family-friendly activities for visitors of all ages.

Nestled on the scenic shores of Penetanguishene Bay, Discovery Harbour is only 90 minutes north of Toronto and 40-minutes from Barrie and Orillia. Discovery Harbour boasts a rich seafarers’ history as a former British naval and military base. Now open for the summer season, the historic site sets the stage for Ontario’s largest and most exciting pirate festival and one of Ontario's Top 100 events.

“Discovery Harbour stands out as one of Ontario’s unique family-friendly historical sites, and Pirates of the Bay is a great reason to visit,” said Stan Cho, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. “Bring your friends and loved ones to Penetanguishene for a day of with fun events and activities for all ages. This exciting nautical experience is something you can only fine here in Ontario.”

Young buccaneers will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of pirate-themed activities, such as crafts, games and inflatable obstacle courses. They’ll also meet costumed characters and the infamous Skeleton Jack. Whether you're a seasoned pirate or a first-time adventurer, this interactive experience guarantees endless fun and excitement.

"Pirates of the Bay is a one-of-a-kind event that combines history, excitement and fun," said Will Baird, general manager, Huronia Historical Parks. “We can't wait to welcome families and fans for another spectacular year at Discovery Harbour.”

Visitors can explore the historic site, enjoy pirate-themed snacks and souvenirs at the Scallywag Tavern, visit the H.M.S. Tecumseth Centre to see an original shipwreck raised from the depths, watch thrilling pirate demonstrations, hear the roar of musket fire and interact with scaly and slimy creatures!

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. Tickets are available for purchase online at DiscoveryHarbour.on.ca or at the Charthouse upon arrival.

"Our goal is to provide an engaging and educational experience for all visitors," said Candice Moreau, Manager of Marketing and Visitor Services. "Join us for a day of pirate-themed adventure and create lifelong family memories."

To extend the fun, visitors are encouraged to pre-book evening experiences, which are also available on August 3. Ghost Tours offer a 1.5-hour guided exploration of the supernatural side of the historic site, while the Bo'sun's Brig: Escape Room provides a one-hour challenge for teams of 4-6 players to solve puzzles and riddles. These popular activities have limited spaces, so advance booking through Discovery Harbour’s website is recommended.
