Downtown Barrie’s vibrant cultural scene is about to take centre stage with a spectacular performance by Ombiigizi as part of the Open Air Live Music series.

On Sunday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., Meridian Place will echo with the powerful and evocative sounds of this dynamic Anishinaabe musical collaboration, promising an unforgettable evening of music and community spirit.

Ombiigizi, pronounced om-BEE-ga-ZAY, meaning “this is noisy,” is the creative brainchild of acclaimed musicians Adam Sturgeon (Status/Non-Status) and Daniel Monkman (Zoon). This Juno Award-nominated and Polaris Music Prize-shortlisted duo is at the forefront of a resurgence in Indigenous music, blending elements of post-rock, shoegaze, and alternative music with deep-rooted Anishinaabe storytelling traditions. Their music, described as “Indigenous futurism through a heavy psychedelic folk lens,” has resonated deeply with audiences, earning widespread critical acclaim for its emotional depth and cultural significance.

As part of their performance, Ombiigizi will share tracks from their highly praised debut album, Sewn Back Together, and possibly new material from their forthcoming sophomore album. The band’s sound is a unique and compelling fusion of modern rock and ancient melodies, offering a sonic journey that is both introspective and cathartic.

“Having Ombiigizi perform at Meridian Place is not just a concert; it’s a celebration of the rich cultural tapestry that makes Barrie so unique,” said Chas Hay, owner at HeyBear Productions. “We are thrilled to bring this remarkable duo to our community, offering an experience that is both musically innovative and deeply meaningful.”

Join us at Meridian Place on Sunday, Sept. 8 for an evening that promises to be a highlight of Barrie’s fall event season. Bring your family and friends, and immerse yourself in the powerful sounds and stories of Ombiigizi, a performance that reflects the heart and soul of Anishinaabe music in a contemporary context.
