The city invites people to "relive the nostalgia of retro video games" and go head-to-head in a tournament this weekend at Barrie's annual Game On! event.
The annual gaming event takes place Saturday, Sept. 23, in partnership with the Barrie Public Library Comic Fest.
This year’s event features an all-ages Mario Kart tournament, hosted by local company We Got Game, taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the downtown branch of the Barrie Public Library, located at 60 Worsley St. Participants can check in on site at the Game On! booth during the library’s Comic Fest.
Later in the day, the Game On! After Dark will take place, from 6-10 p.m. at the Five Points Theatre, located at 1 Dunlop St. W. It is for ages 19 and up will feature Barrie’s Ultimate Gamer Tournament. Hosted by local YouTube channel RekAllTheThings, the top four competitors will face off for the chance to be named Barrie’s Ultimate Gamer 2023.
There will be a cosplay mixer, hosted by SnowHawk Cosplay, with featured cosplayers on site, and the chance to be crowned Barrie’s Ultimate Cosplayer 2023. The winner of this year’s contest will receive a professional photo shoot, courtesy of Stephen Elliott Photography.
The evening event will also feature an escape room and retro gaming and board game lounge areas. Participants are invited to bring their own board games. Admission is free, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.
