Come for dinner and stay for the dialogue.
Simcoe Engage and Empower with Dialogue (SEED), a local non-profit group committed to building bridges between cultures and communities, is hosting a special Iftar dinner on March 22, at Allandale Recreation Centre. The goal is to bring together community leaders, faith representatives and advocates for diversity and inclusion to foster intercultural dialogue and strengthen community ties.
“The SEED Iftar Dinner is a gathering designed to foster intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and social harmony in Simcoe County," said SEED board member Sarah Aydin. "By bringing together community leaders, faith representatives, and residents from diverse backgrounds, this event serves as a platform to celebrate unity and inclusivity.”
The dinner will provide an opportunity for attendees to engage in meaningful conversations, experience the traditions of Ramadan as well as strengthen community relationships, she said, adding the event is “more than just a meal.”
“This evening will allow guests to reflect on shared values, break barriers and develop deeper connections with one another," said Aydin.
An Iftar meal is the fast-breaking evening meal eaten by Muslims in Ramadan, which is considered one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims around the world.
“From dawn until sunset, Muslims abstain from food and drink, breaking their fast at Iftar, the evening meal that symbolizes community, generosity and shared blessings," she said. "The tradition of gathering for Iftar extends beyond religious observance — it is a deeply social experience that brings people together, fosters conversations and strengthens bonds."
This event is particularly special because it coincides with Simcoe County’s #ITSTARTS campaign, which raises awareness about racism, discrimination and the importance of fostering inclusive communities, added Aydin.
“Since both initiatives share the goal of promoting dialogue and social cohesion, hosting the Iftar dinner as part of the campaign was a natural fit. The dinner offers a practical and engaging way to promote diversity, encourage conversation, and showcase the strength of a united community," she said.
"By participating, attendees will not only learn about Ramadan and the significance of breaking fast together, but will also contribute to a broader movement for inclusivity and understanding.”
By sharing in an Iftar meal, attendees actively participate in an experience that reflects compassion, unity and respect for diversity, noted Aydin.
“An event like this is particularly important in today’s world, where understanding and respect across cultures are essential for a strong and united community," she said. "By bringing together individuals from different faiths, professions and backgrounds, this Iftar dinner challenges misconceptions, fosters relationships, and strengthens our social fabric.
“It offers a unique chance to engage in discussions that highlight our shared values while celebrating the diversity that makes our community vibrant. Events like this play a crucial role in reducing social divisions, encouraging cooperation and fostering a sense of belonging for all residents.”
Anyone is welcome to attend the event, which is scheduled to run from 7-9 p.m. in the main hall at the Allandale Recreation Centre, located at 190 Bayview Dr.
“By attending, guests will not only experience the warmth and hospitality of an Iftar meal, but also take part in shaping a more inclusive Simcoe County — one conversation, one meal and one shared experience at a time.”
