A unique private-public partnership established in 1999 celebrated a milestone as part of the Georgian College Auto Show.
Georgian College and the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) have registered the 100,000th student in the Automotive Certification course.
To mark the occasion MaryLynn West-Moynes, Georgian College President and CEO, presented John Carmichael, OMVIC Chief Executive Officer, with a recognition certificate on Friday, June 2.
“We’re proud to have such a successful and long-standing partnership with OMVIC to deliver the Automotive Certification course at Georgian,” said West-Moynes. “The value of offering quality programming, delivered by experts in the automotive field is proven by reaching our 100,000th registration, and by the over 36,000 industry professionals registered with OMVIC.”
Georgian College and OMVIC’s unique joint venture relationship began in November, 1999, when they partnered to deliver an Automotive Certification course.
With students registering from across North America, the program continues to grow and is expanding. It will be offered online this fall. Since its inception in 1999, there has been a 36 per cent increase in annual program enrolments.

As the regulator of motor vehicle sales in Ontario, OMVIC’s mandate is to maintain a fair and informed marketplace by protecting the rights of consumers, enhancing industry professionalism and ensuring fair, honest and open competition for registered motor vehicle dealers.
The Automotive Certification course is the result of a joint venture (started in 1999) between Georgian College’s Automotive Business School of Canada and the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council. It is intended to:
- promote professionalism in the Ontario automotive retail industry
- provide better protection for customers
- set the standard for employee ethics within the automotive industry
The OMVIC Automotive Certification course is taken by individuals seeking automotive salesperson/dealer registration in the province. In 2016, OMVIC had 36,013 automotive industry registrants, comprising 8,099 dealers and 27,914 salespersons.
