A pair of upcoming games for the Barrie Colts against an Ontario Hockey League division rival have been postponed after a dozen Sudbury Wolves players tested positive for COVID-19.
The OHL on Tuesday announced that the Wolves have suspended all team activities as a result of 12 players having tested positive for the virus.
“All players affected are currently asymptomatic or exhibiting mild symptoms and the league and team will continue to monitor their well-being," the league said in a news release.
The Colts were in Sudbury on Sunday, coming away with a 4-2 win over the Wolves.
“All players and staff of the Barrie Colts Hockey Club were also tested following their game in Sudbury on Sunday," OHL spokesperson Josh Sweetland said in an email to BarrieToday.
Sweetland said all tests on the Barrie players came back negative.
When contacted on Monday, Colts president and owner Howie Campbell told BarrieToday they have one player who is away from the team after testing positive for COVID-19, but it was unrelated to Sunday's game.
“We have one boy who was sent home to isolate because he tested positive, but he had no symptoms. He’s sitting in his basement, mad that he can’t play hockey,” Campbell said.
Aside from the single case, “we are doing good, following all the protocols and being safe. We’re very careful and fortunate we are in such good health," he added.
The Barrie Colts were scheduled to play Sudbury in a home-and-home match-up this Friday and Saturday, but those games will be rescheduled for a later date due to the situation around the Wolves.
The OHL had previously incorporated specific COVID-19 protocols, including mandatory vaccination for all members of the OHL community, including players, staff, officials, and billets.
