On June 8, 400 Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students from Grades 6-8 will take part in an educational day at Springwater Park. The event, run in partnership with the Barrie Native Friendship Centre, is a year-end celebration of their learning of indigenous culture.
The event will include:
- An introduction to the Pow Wow featuring local drummers, dancers and SCDSB youth dancers
- Canoe launch – a traditional birch bark canoe built by students in April (in partnership with a local indigenous artist) will be officially launched at 11:30 a.m.
- Activity centres: Ojibwe language, story-telling, Inuit games and Métis jigging/dancing – all day
“This event will bring students and staff from across the county together to celebrate their learning over the past year,” says Alison Bradshaw, SCDSB principal of First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education. “I’m so proud of what they have accomplished in implementing and learning about indigenous culture.”
In addition to activities for students, teachers involved in the SCDSB’s Truth and ReconciliAction project will share their year-long work toward the integration of indigenous learning and successful student projects.
The event at Springwater Park runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is welcome to attend this free event (parking fees apply for Springwater Park).
