NEWS RELEASE
LIVING GREEN BARRIE
***************************
Living Green Barrie is hosting a Holiday Tree Fundraiser with proceeds going towards planting 10,000 trees in Barrie.
Barrie’s environmental charity wants to make your holidays a bit greener this year. They are selling live and cut green Christmas trees in the Georgian Mall Parking Lot on Dec. 5 and 6 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
The smaller, live potted trees can be used as an outdoor porch decoration then brought inside for a few days over the holidays as a tabletop tree. In the spring, the trees can be planted in people’s yards or brought to one of Living Green’s community events to be planted.
After the holidays, the trees should be brought back outside for the rest of the winter.
“It’s important the trees don’t stay indoors for too long, or they might not survive the transplant in the spring. Trees in the winter are dormant (sleeping). If they stay warm for too long, they’ll wake up,” says Andee Pelan, director of Living Green.
Living Green is also offering full-sized cut trees for sale. The trees are 6-7’ locally-sourced white spruce.
“We believe this is truly the greenest option for a Christmas tree… that is, if you don’t already own an artificial tree that you’ve had for years,” Pelan says.
These trees support a local grower, are a native species, and avoid creating more non-recyclable plastic. Further, the proceeds from cut trees go back to Living Green to plant even more trees.
The live trees are $30, and the cut trees are $50. Both can be pre-ordered on Living Green’s webpage and picked up in person at the charity tree lot at the Georgian Mall. The tree lot is located at the front parking lot close to the Bay. There will also be displays offering holiday greening tips. Please wear your masks, wash your hands, and practice social distancing.
Living Green is also hoping people will donate to their 10,000 Trees for Barrie Campaign by “buying” a tree gift certificate. It is a perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for person in the family who doesn’t want anything except a better future for the planet. People who donate $25 or more at the event will receive a printed certificate and a free handmade wooden tree ornament while supplies last. Charitable tax receipts will also be issued.
