Area hospital on ‘cutting edge’ with new X-ray suite

'It feels good to be able to give them the top-notch equipment to help them do their jobs,' said one of key donors behind new $1.5M X-ray machine

Two major donors responsible for the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital’s new X-ray machine were on hand on Monday to help cut the ribbon on the new, state-of-the-art equipment.

The new machine, which cost just over $1.5 million, was made possible through donations from two major donors, Jan Lafreniere and Linda Stillabower, who were first in line on Monday to see the new equipment.

The new suite will start taking patients on Sept. 12.

“This is amazing. It’s always nice to see the money get to work, especially for this hospital,” said Lafreniere.

Lafreniere, who made the donation on behalf of Lefreniere Auto, said she chooses to donate to the hospital because she worked there for many years, all but one of her grandchildren were born within the hospital's walls and her parents were also treated there.

“We need a community hospital. We need more,” she said.

Linda Stillabower said CGMH sets itself apart from other community hospitals.

“It’s the people,” she said. “The people here are astounding – the doctors, nurses and volunteers. It feels good to be able to give them the top-notch equipment to help them do their jobs.”

The new X-ray machine represents a major leap forward for CGMH’s imaging capabilities. The machine is located in a newly-renovated room that supports both traditional X-rays and fluoroscopy, and is part of a broader initiative to enhance diagnostic imaging overall at the hospital.

Also planned over the next year will be the reveal of the hospital’s new CT machine this fall, and the arrival of the hospital’s first MRI machine in 2025.

The new X-ray machine includes enhanced imaging capabilities, orthopaedic applications and advanced robotic features.

“This significant investment reflects our dedication to ensuring that our community has access to cutting-edge diagnostic imaging technology with here at home,” said CGMH President and CEO Michael Lacroix in a news release. “The enhancements will greatly improve patient care by providing more precise and efficient diagnostic capabilities.”

The online booking system for X-rays at CGMH will remain in place. Appointments can be booked here.
