Scooting along snowmobile trails will take on a greater purpose for local sledders this weekend.

On Saturday, the Georgian Bay Snowriders Association holds its annual charity snowmobile ride in support of the Southern Georgian Bay Airboat Rescue Initiative.

β€œThis event will bring together community members, local leaders and snowmobile enthusiasts to enjoy a winter adventure while contributing to a life-saving cause,” event co-ordinator Jim McDowell notes.

Funds raised are going toward the purchase of a custom water and ice rescue craft that will aid water and ice rescue efforts 365 days a year.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Riders will depart from the John Power Centre on Newton Street in Victoria Harbour. The cost to participate is $40 per rider and $20 per passenger.

As well, those taking part must have valid permits to ride OFSC trails.

The airboat rescue initiative began several years ago after three snowmobilers lost their lives in a single weekend after falling through the ice on Georgian Bay.
