DeAnne Smith is coming to Barrie for an exclusive one-night engagement at the Five Points Theatre on Saturday, March 9.
Canadian Comedy Award winner, Smith has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Just for Laughs Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, and the Iceland Comedy Festival, to name a few.
Most recently, Smith starred on Netflix’s “Comedians of the World”, which brought together 47 comedians from 13 regions in an unprecedented stand-up comedy series. Her special, “Gentlemen Elf,” received a surprise shout-out on Instagram from Amy Schumer and a glowing review from Luke Lucas who wrote, “DeAnne Smith is brilliant. The transmasculine house mouse combines the sagacity of age with the vulnerability of youth.”
Smith has been performing for years, but it was a 2017 video, “Straight men, step your game up,” that went viral and quickly gained over 47 million views on CBC’s Comedy Facebook page and put her in the limelight.
Directly after the Ontario tour, Smith heads back to Melbourne, where she has a loyal following. Melbourne’s “The Music” called her show, “a virtuoso display of smart, slick, silly brilliance — a metaphorical (and literal) mic-drop of a show,” giving it five stars; while the U.K.’s Chortle says Smith is “always relevant, but never reverent.” The U.K. Telegraph wrote she’s “Smart. Very funny. Effortless charm lets her get away with murder.”
The upcoming tour starts in Ottawa then heads to Kingston, Belleville, Hamilton, Barrie, and St. Catharines.
