What initially started as a pandemic project four years ago and quickly became one of the most-needed local charities in Barrie celebrated a new program this week.

Barrie Families Unite (BFU), which was founded during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and provides “dignified access” to essential needs for local families, launched a new initiative this week in its efforts to help the community even more.

During an event held Nov. 21, charity officials announced the organization’s new Doors to Dignity campaign, which hopes to raise $500,000 toward the opening of a social enterprise thrift store.

They say the store will be designed to provide access to essentials for economically vulnerable individuals and families in Barrie and will serve as a cornerstone of the community, offering low- or no-cost items while acting as a hub for connection, skill-building and sustainability.

Under the Doors to Dignity initiative, clients referred by local agencies will be empowered to shop for items that meet their specific needs, fostering dignity, choice and independence.

The campaign, noted BFU executive director and founder Nikki Glahn, represents "hope and opportunity for the community."

“This thrift store will allow us to expand our services, ensuring that everyone — regardless of their circumstances — can access the essentials they need in a way that respects their individuality and autonomy," Glahn said.

Rhonda Kent, director of housing and supportive community at Redwood Park Communities, one of the local agencies that partners with BFU, echoed this sentiment.

“BFU has always been an incredible resource for our clients,” she said. “The Doors to Dignity initiative takes an innovative, sustainable, inclusive and hopeful approach to addressing the rising need. On top of that, it will strengthen community."

The number of households requiring essential support has increased dramatically in the city in recent years, making BFU’s new thrift store model vital to the region and the funds raised through this campaign will go toward securing and transforming a location, hiring store staff and launching operations to ensure BFU’s long-term sustainability and growth, thereby providing security of BFU programming for years to come.
