When one part of Canada is hurting the entire country is hurting.
That has become obvious with the outpouring of concern and sympathy extended to the community of Humboldt, Saskatchewan after the fatal bus crash over the weekend.
Fifteen people were killed including 10 members of the Humboldt Broncos Junior ‘A’ hockey team.
A couple of local fundraisers have been planned for this weekend.
On Saturday, the Barrie Community Wellness Centre is inviting residents to make greeting cards to send to the team, family and community at large.
Organizer Melanie Roach says the hope is to send a huge box of cards out west.
The Barrie Minor Hockey Association will take part in the free event to be held April 14 at 59A Maple Ave. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On Sunday, The Lockeroom in Barrie will donate 10 per cent of sales from the day to assist the families impacted by the tragedy.
Cash donations will be accepted and Humboldt Broncos T-shirts will be sold with money forwarded to the GoFundMe account. The goal of $4 million has been surpassed and the account now stands at well over $7 million.
Residents are also invited to lean hockey sticks on the wall outside The Lockeroom, on Cundles Road East, in tribute.
