The Barrie Public Library is excited to launch the annual Summer Reading Club (SRC) this July.

The TD Summer Reading Club is offered at more than 2,000 public libraries across Canada, celebrating Canadian authors, illustrators and stories, and inspiring kids to explore the fun of reading in their own way.

The library has tons of activities, programs and reading challenges to take part in every day this summer. Kids ages three to 12 are invited to sign up to take part in the fun beginning July 2.

“Sometimes all it takes is that one special book to spark a love of reading in a child,” says Serena McGovern, children’s services librarian at the Barrie Public Library. “That’s what the Summer Reading Club is all about — encouraging kids to read for fun, which will hopefully turn into a lifelong love of books.”

Kids can participate from wherever summer takes them – coming in person to the library to track their books and collect prizes, or participating online through the Beanstack Tracker app. The app includes fun reading challenges and activities for the chance to earn badges.

“The Summer Reading Club is really awesome," says nine-year-old Carter Cook. "I love coming to the library with my mom. We get a lot of books, my favourite are graphic novels. I'm excited to see what prizes I can get this year."

The Barrie Public Library will be hosting many exciting events and programs as part of the SRC, including escape rooms, painting parties, science experiments, game nights and so much more. Library staff will also be visiting parks and beaches across the city throughout the summer. It all kicks off with a Bike Rodeo on Wednesday, July 3 at the Painswick library.

Last year, nearly 1,700 children and 90 teens took part in the Summer Reading Club. Collectively, these participants read over 22,000 books.
