The Barrie & District Association of REALTORS (BDAR) launches its fourth annual virtual fundraiser, A Night of Shelter.

From today until Nov. 25, BDAR will collect donations for Youth Haven, Redwood Park Communities, and Hospice Simcoe.

One night of shelter provides a person in crisis with the resources and support needed to start their journey to health and well-being, including medical, counselling, employment assistance, and housing.

“An average night of shelter in our region costs $30 and our goal is to raise 365 nights totalling $11,000,” says Lindsay Percy, 2024 BDAR chair. “Here are a few stories from those who have benefited from shelter and programs provided by our partnering organizations.”

“I stayed at Youth Haven on and off from ages 16 to 20. They supported me and taught me the skills I needed to be where I am today. Through good times and bad, they were always there for me. They never gave up on me even at my worst. They were the parents I never had. It’s the best place for youth in need and always will be.”

“I’ve only been here an hour, and it already feels like home.”

Homelessness refers to the lack of safe, stable, permanent, and affordable housing.

“It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation. It includes families who are on the verge of losing their homes due to unaffordability, the hidden homeless population staying with friends or family because they have nowhere to go, others escaping trauma, system breakdowns, and so much more,” Percy explains.

BDAR has been a longtime contributor to local shelter-based organizations through various initiatives. This year we have shifted our focus to showcase local organizations that provide transitional and residential care housing within our community, help individuals and families get back on their feet, and create a brighter future.

“We look forward to another successful fundraiser and working with local organizations making a positive impact on our community,” says Percy.

Your donations give the gift of hope to those seeking shelter in Simcoe County and support the programs provided by these local agencies. Every little bit counts, and you can donate today at bdar.ca/anos.
