Madison Mueller has a lot to celebrate today.

It's her 17th birthday and the day she releases her new single titled 'Breath of Air.'

The talented Barrie high school student wrote the song with her ukulele late one night doing what many teens do - homework.

"I started playing on the ukulele and drifting off to happier places because you know - you're doing homework. It's not the happiest time,"  Mueller joked.

"The song is a little bit more carefree about living the life you want to live. Very carefree. That's the word I've been using to describe it."

It's been a busy and very big year for the grade 11 student at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School.

Her first single 'Who Am I' has received airplay on over 200 FM and internet radio stations all over the world.

She did a live 20-minute radio interview on a syndicated show in Florida.

She released the official video for 'Who Am I' three weeks ago and it has over 20,000 views on a few different sites and over 17,000 views here

'Who Am I' reached number one in Canada on the website ReverbNation.com a few times consecutively over the past few months.

"Number six in all genres. Number one in singer songwriter. It was just mind blowing. Never thought I'd see that. It's really cool to see people take an interest in what I want to do," she said.

That interest included inquiries from Capitol Records, among several others Mueller has received about her music.

Summer plans include getting a band together so that she can expand her live performances, playing lots of music and baseball with her select team, Barrie Storm.

And get ready for grade 12. But Mueller has already chosen to follow her dream of a career in music.

The momentum she has felt this year has helped inspire her to take that direction.

"This is what I want to do in my life. Releasing this new song is going to be really cool to see what happens with that and seeing if it will grow even more because I really like the song.  It's more the style I want to do.  It's more funky, little bit more rock."

For her birthday, there's the release of her new single and of course Madison is going to school.

Maybe her Oma will make the teen's favourite cake to celebrate her two big milestones.

"It's like banana cream pie but it's cake form. There's chocolate over top of it. It's the best thing I've ever had."The new single is available here
