NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF BARRIE
************************
Barrie residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of used (and intact) batteries and help protect the environment during Battery Collection Week, which takes place from Nov. 4 to 8.

Battery bags with instructions will be mailed to households during the week of Oct. 7.

Batteries can also be placed in clear, sealable bags. Residents are asked to place battery bags beside recycling boxes on their regular curbside collection day.

Residents are reminded that prior to disposal, batteries should be stored in a cool, dry location, away from any flammable material. During storage, battery terminals should not be in contact with materials that could conduct electricity or heat. The terminals on 9-volt and lithium batteries should be covered with electrical tape prior to storage.

Collected batteries are sent for processing to separate and recycle the various components.

The program is for rechargeable and single-use batteries only, including type AAA, AA, A, C, D, 9 volt and button batteries commonly used for hearing aids and watches.

Cell phone, laptop, car batteries and battery packs are NOT accepted in the curbside program but may be taken to the Barrie Landfill Site (272 Ferndale Dr. N.), which is open Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
