Work has been ongoing this week to remove the Bell Canada tower on Beacon Road in south-end Barrie.

A structure familiar to many on the Barrie skyline is being torn down and won't be replaced.

Work has been ongoing this week to dismantle the Bell Canada radio tower, located on Beacon Road in the city’s south end near Essa Road.

A large crane has been visible from various vantage points around the city.

“We are removing the equipment at this location as it is no longer in use,” Morgan Shipley, senior manager of communications at Bell Media, told BarrieToday. “The radio tower on Beacon Road is being removed because it was not being used for many years and it will not be replaced.”

This is not to be confused with the massive CTV tower, which is also located nearby and is around 300 metres high looking over Highway 400.

The Bell tower reached 70 metres into the sky and was located within a gated Bell Canada compound.

However, on July 8, 2021, it was also the site of a rescue when a man climbed the structure. Emergency crews were brought in to bring the man down safely.
