Book of condolences for Alexandra Paul set up at rec centre

Community members can pay respects by signing book at Mariposa School of Skating

A book of condolences in memory of local resident Alexandra Paul is available in front of the Mariposa School of Skating at the Allandale Recreation Centre for those who wish to pay their respects.

The recreation centre is located in south-end Barrie at 190 Bayview Dr.

The young Barrie mother, lawyer and former Olympian was killed in a seven-vehicle collision in Melancthon Township the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 22.

Paul, 31, worked as a lawyer at Barriston Law in Barrie since being called to the bar in 2021 and was a well-known figure skater, having competed at the Sochi Olympics with her husband and ice-dance partner, Mitch Islam, in 2014.

According to Dufferin OPP, emergency crews responded to a serious collision around 3 p.m. on Aug. 22 involving seven vehicles, including a transport truck, on County Road 124, south of 20th Sideroad and about one hour southwest of Barrie.

Police say Paul was travelling with the couple’s 10-month old son, Charlie. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and later taken by ambulance to a children's hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
