Bradford Farmers' Market a locavore’s delight (6 photos)

Fresh strawberries from Barrie Hill Farm among the local delicacies, as well as radishes, potatoes and sweet peas

Saturday wasn’t quite as busy at the Bradford Farmers’ Market as it was on June 29, when crowds came out for the Canada-day-themed family carnival, but the market was busy enough.

Clarinetist Sean Derraugh helped heat up an already hot summer day with some steamy jazz, as shoppers came out for the fresh seasonal produce, fresh baked breads and treats, local honey, maple-based sauces and dips, preserves, jams, fresh eggs, European meats and fresh grass-fed beef, and more.

Over at Sweet Annabella’s, Tammy Jackson added to her repertoire of pies, tarts and date squares, with filo pastry cups filled with strawberry-rhubarb or S’mores, providing a perfect balance between gooey filling and carmelized crunch.

Chef Ryszard Surdyk, the 'Polish Baker', had his usual array of fresh breads and pretzels, but also a selection of perogies filled with everything from classic potato and cottage cheese, to blueberry.

Fresh strawberries from Barrie Hill Farm, local radishes, lettuce, new potatoes and sweet peas from the Holland Marsh ... the market was a locavore’s delight.

The Bradford Farmers’ Market is held in the parking lot beside the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library, 425 Holland St. W., every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. Next Saturday, the Market’s musical guest is Jason Hogan.

And mark your calendars: July 20 is Caribbean Day, featuring the steel drums of Kenn Lewis.
