There are long line-ups at Loblaws locations Monday night after a system-wide outage hit the grocery chains' debit and credit payment system.

Loblaws stores across Canada are cash only following the outage that may have occurred as early as noon.

Customers took to twitter to express frustration at the inconvenience.

"Don't waste your time @LoblawsON tonight- been to 2 stores and CC and Debit are down... does anybody even carry cash anymore??," said one tweet.

"Just in case I'm not the last to know this, all debit and credit machines for Loblaws are down in Atlantic Canada. Dominion is cash only," tweeted another shopper.

".@LoblawsON's payment system is having problems. No @INTERAC debit and no @TD_Canada credit cards! #WhatIsThisThingYouCallCash?" tweeted another person.

An employee at the Bayfield store in Barrie said that No Frills, Super Stores and other outlets under Loblaws Companies Ltd. were also affected by system failure.

Customers are notified by in-store announcements over the PA system.

On Mar. 22, Shopper's Drug Mart had a computer outage affecting 1,300 locations that lasted more than two days.

The national pharmacy retail chain is owned by Loblaw Companies Ltd.
