The rink by the lake has been getting lots of use by hockey players, skaters and those loving the feel of Canadiana.
The Centennial Park Community Rink has been open for the season since late-December, but has been a staple on the lakefront since 2017.
Kyle Sharp was one of the players taking in some great outdoor weather in the last few days. The 18-year-old said Centennial Park was his go-to hockey spot and he can usually be found there if loved ones are looking for him.
“I actually don’t skate anywhere else unless I have to,” said Sharp. “If I have a game at the indoor rinks, that’s different. Other than that, I’m down here all the time. My girlfriend actually just heads here if she can’t reach me.”
One of the main features of the rink are its surroundings. With Kempenfelt Bay just feet away, Sharp wants the city to look at hosting an annual tournament at the rink, even suggesting an outdoor classic, of sorts, by one of the local hockey associations such as the Barrie Minor Hockey Association or the Barrie Women's Hockey Association.
“It would be great to film a game here, maybe an outdoor classic with the BMHA or a Sharks team,” said Sharp. “I don’t know where anyone would sit, but hockey parents stand by the glass anyway.”
The rink has a few chairs, mainly used by players to sit on and tie up their skates. Snow surrounds the outside of the boards, which may make it hard for an audience to walk around.
A representative from the city said there haven’t been any talks to hold such an event and nothing currently being developed.
With or without a big organized game, Sharp says he will be out every day he can be for the great view and camaraderie shared by those who don the skates.
“There are games happening here all the time and everyone joins in,” said Sharp. “That is the other cool thing about the rink. All you need are your skates and a stick and you’re always welcome to jump on the ice and play.
"I’ve made great friends here from hockey alone.”
The Centennial Park Community Rink is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
