The OPP had to "take precautions" to safely remove chemicals found at a fire scene at a 9th Line property in New Tecumseth.

Nottawasaga OPP Staff Sgt. Brian Humber says a criminal investigation is underway.

"It's going to be an extensive investigation," said Humber. "There were chemicals at the site and it's still being looked at to see what in fact they are and the nature of why they are there."

Police had closed the 9th Line west of 20th Sideroad for two days following the fire in one of the outbuildings at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Humber says the OPP have cleared the scene and reopened the road Tuesday evening.

"The chemicals have all been removed and there's no longer a public safety issue," Humber said. "We obviously had to take some precautions so that's what was slow. We wanted to make sure it was being done safely for the community and all the personnel including fire and the officers."

Police would not elaborate on what types of chemicals were found or their intended use.

"We're looking at a few different aspects on it," said Humber. "I'm not going to get into specifics of what we're looking into."

No one was injured in the fire which is also being investigated by the Fire Marshal.

Humber says part of the investigation will focus on whether anyone was inside the outbuilding when the fire started.

There is a residence on the property but Humber didn't know if it was occupied.
