The City of Barrie is accepting applications from eligible local organizations for the Bright Futures Barrie Grant, which will provide funding to support new or enhanced programming for at-risk children, youth and young adults.

Funding is available to organizations that provide services within Barrie.

The City of Barrie was awarded federal grant funding by the Building Safer Communities Fund through Public Safety Canada to develop and implement the Bright Futures Barrie strategy.

The strategy focuses on supporting sustainable community programs targeted to individuals aged six to 26 that address risk factors associated with gun and gang violence, including the underlying social conditions that give rise to crime. The success of programs funded through the Bright Futures Barrie Grant will inform the strategy, which will focus on long-term, sustainable initiatives.

“The City of Barrie is grateful to the federal government for this important investment in the safety of our community and the future of our young citizens,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “These funds will be used to address the root causes associated with youth involvement in crime. Developing and implementing programs and services for young people in Barrie will increase success in education, help them learn and develop skill sets to support gainful employment, and build social skills and networks that will set them up for a bright future.”

In February 2024, an open call for proposals was issued and 11 community organizations were awarded funding for a total of $570,000 through the city’s Bright Futures Barrie Grant to support initiatives designed to help youth experiencing homelessness, struggles in school, addictions, and mental health challenges.

Applications will be accepted to Dec. 6, 2024. The funding period is April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
