County welcomes 38 new Canadians at citizenship ceremony

New citizens who pledged allegiance to Canada on Saturday come from 20 countries

To kick off the county’s first annual Week of Welcome, the County of Simcoe hosted a citizenship ceremony at the administration centre in Midhurst today, which saw 38 new Canadians from 20 different countries gain their citizenship, including many local residents.

“Today 38 people of all ages fulfilled their dream to become Canadians, and the county was pleased to be a part of their special day,” said Warden Basil Clarke. “The county is home to more than 82,000 immigrants who contribute so much to our local communities.”

The citizenship ceremony was led by the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. This is the first time that the county, through the Simcoe County Local Immigration Partnership, has hosted a citizenship ceremony.

Week of Welcome will see events taking place across the region to educate newcomers and residents on municipal services that support with transitions and familiarity to our communities. Five events are scheduled throughout the week, including June 12 in Innisfil, June 13 in New Tecumseth, June 14 in Orillia, June 15 in Barrie, and June 16 in Collingwood.
