Employees at a downtown Barrie bar and restaurant got a bit of a scare early Saturday morning after a patron was seen brandishing a handgun.

Barrie police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man after he was removed from the unnamed Dunlop Street East restaurant shortly after 1 a.m., July 22, in what police officials dubbed a "busy" weekend for officers in the city's downtown.

“We did have officers respond to the area and we conducted a canine tracking in the event the (weapon) had been discarded, but we couldn’t locate anything,” Barrie police communication co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday.

No description of the suspect is available at this time, he noted, but the investigation is ongoing.

“A gun is a gun is a gun,” he said, acknowledging that, whether the firearm was real or fake, it likely offered staff and other customers a fright.
