The City of Barrie, in partnership with Pollution Probe, will unveil new drone technology on Thursday which could help keep Lake Simcoe clean.

Pollution Probe and the City of Barrie will unveil new drone technology on Thursday that can be used to help clean up Lake Simcoe.

Called a PixieDrone, it’s a remotely operated mobile waste collector capable of navigating various bodies of water to remove floating debris, including organic, plastic, metal and paper.

The Barrie Marina partnered with Pollution Probe earlier this year on its Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup program.

In addition to the opportunity to pilot the new drone, Pollution Probe has already provided the Barrie Marina with other trash-trapping technologies, such as Seabins, and supported the marina with trash audits.

Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall, Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte MPP Doug Downey and Pollution Probe CEO Christopher Hilkene are to be on hand at the Barrie Marina tomorrow morning, along Lakeshore Drive, to unveil the new drone technology.
