Losses are estimated at $350,000 after an overnight fire destroyed a home on Highview Road in Barrie.
Barrie Firefighters were called to the home in the Duckworth and Grove Streets around 2 a.m. after flames broke out.
The fire appears to have originated in a basement bedroom.
A father and three children escaped without injury along with two pets, a dog and a cat.
Another dog and cat died in the blaze and one cat is missing.
Barrie Fire Public Fire and Life Safety Officer Samantha Hoffman says the family, who was renting the home, did not have tenant insurance and lost everything.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
It appears the home may have been equipped with working smoke detectors but Hoffman says that will be part of the investigation.
