Fire official urges caution following multiple blazes this week

'When you’re cooking in the kitchen, stay in the kitchen'

Three blazes in five days have Barrie Fire and Emergency Services asking people to be aware and take precautions.

A Thursday afternoon fire at a Cardinal Street home in the city's north end displaced several college students for an indefinite amount of time as the investigation continues.

A fire department official on the scene told BarrieToday that while the cause is not yet determined, there was “heavy damage to the kitchen” as well as the exterior of the house.

The fire department had five trucks and 24 personnel at the scene, which is located between Meadowlark Road and Blue Jay Drive in the vicinity of St. Vincent Street and Cundles Road East.

There were no injuries in today’s fire or the one on Wednesday that damaged an Innisfil Street home. That fire began on a second-storey porch and all occupants were safely evacuated by firefighters.

Sunday’s Caroline Street fire led to the death a 69-year-old man who was pulled from the kitchen by Barrie firefighters. The man died in hospital on Tuesday. That fire also began in the kitchen. No one else in the home was injured.

Assistant Deputy Chief Ed Davis told BarrieToday on Thursday that people need to remain vigilant at all times.

“We encourage everyone to check their smoke alarms regularly. That is always extremely important,” he said. “Also, when you’re cooking in the kitchen, stay in the kitchen. Stove tops and ovens can be unpredictable and you need to be wary.”
