NEWS RELEASE
WOMEN AND CHILDREN'S SHELTER OF BARRIE
*************************
The Women and Children’s Shelter of Barrie and dignitaries from the community will raise the flag in front of city hall on Nov. 25 to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
More than four in 10 women have experienced some form of intimate partner violence in their lifetimes. In 2018, 44 per cent of women reported experiencing some form of psychological, physical, or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes (Statistics Canada, 2021). Women are disproportionately subjected to intimate partner violence, and there is a need to recognize that these are not just numbers but women who have the right to live with dignity and free of fear, violence and discrimination.
The Women and Children’s Shelter of Barrie invites the community to stand in solidarity with women and speak out against gender-based violence on this day. This event is an opportunity to unite, stand with women and pledge your commitment to ending violence against women.
Flag raising and proclamation by Mayor Alex Nutall will begin at noon on Nov. 25, 2022, in front of Barrie City Hall, 70 Collier St.
The Women and Children’s Shelter of Barrie has been dedicated for over 40 years to providing a safe refuge to women and children experiencing abuse. Throughout the month of November the shelter runs its “Shelter Me” campaign to support its operations. The sale of every item from this campaign helps to ensure the safety and well-being of women and children in our community.
