There are now 6 buildings under construction at the $1.5-billion Friday Harbour Resort on Lake Simcoe in Innisfil.
Construction on the first 240 condominium residences is well underway and the townhouse on the island will start soon.
When complete, up to 2,000 condo and hotel residences will be built.
“After 10 years of planning and approvals, followed by three years of site servicing, we are thrilled that construction is now underway on the first phase of resort residences at Friday Harbour,” says Jim De Gasperis, president of ConDrain Group and Friday Harbour spokesperson.
The massive 600-acre luxury resort recently celebrated the completion of the inland marina--one of Canada's largest.
Officials are still talking about the catch of the day.
Approximately 9,000 fish were caught and removed from the old marina basin in order to build the new one.
The fish, representing more than 30 species, were kept in tanks and released into Lake Simcoe.
They were captured with special equipment that sends out low-level current which temporarily stuns the fish.
The current was increased slightly each time, to capture the larger fish.
Now that the marina is re-filled the fish are welcome to return.
The harbour will provide 4.5 kilometres of newly created waterfront and when it is open for boat traffic, berths for up to a thousand boats.
Friday Harbour officials called the excavation of the marina basin and construction of the marina an "engineering milestone."
Other features of the resort are also taking shape.
Approximately 170,000 truckloads of earth have been moved within the 600-acre site to sculpt The Nest, the 18-hole championship golf course now under construction.
A third of Friday Harbour Resort is designated a nature preserve for wildlife and there will be a 7-kilometre network of walking trails through woodland, wetlands and meadows,
