Fuel cleanup at site of deadly Highway 400 crash (4 photos)

It could take some time to complete

The northbound right lane of Highway 400 near Highway 88 is closed as crews begin environmental cleanup following Tuesday night's horrific, fiery crash.

Three people are confirmed dead in the chain reaction collision that occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes

The OPP said thousands of litres of fuel were burnt and more spilled onto the highway and surrounding area.

A worker on site told BarrieToday it could take some time to complete the cleanup.

The working theory from police is that distracted driving may have played a role when a transport truck slammed into the back of traffic that had slowed due to a previous crash.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told BarrieToday that names of the deceased will not be released until dental records are complete.

"It may take days," Schmidt said.

In an update Thursday morning, Schmidt said the three victims were in separate vehicles.
